The Roots of Specitocracy

I recognize that this isn't the normal thing to do; to dream up a new system of government. I recognize what a struggle it would be, even if a superior form of government discovered, to actually institute. However, I feel compelled to do this work, because I simply refuse to accept what is going on around me without making some kind of stand. Unlike other people who rally to a political party, an ideology or worse a leader to find answers, I believe that a more fundamental change needs to take place.

The concept of a Specitocracy has its roots in the Alvin Toffler's book, The Third Wave. This book changed my perception of history and has had a profound impact in my political thinking, if you haven't read it I highly recommend it or if nothing else there is an excellent Wikipedia page on it, just type “Toffler Third Wave” in google and you shouldn't have any problems finding information. One of the ideas that this book presents is that we now are ruled by systems of government that were designed for the industrial age (the Second Wave) , however we are now living in the information age (the Third Wave as Toffler calls it). Toffler argued that the democratic systems of government that now rule us are not well suited to the world we are now living in. Ironically, they are now succumbing to the same type of obsolesce as the kingdoms that they replaced. While Toffler gave no specifics on what kind of political system might replace the current representative democracies, he argued that they needed to be more democratic, more flexible with a faster ability to adapt to a changing world. Furthermore, society itself has changed and has become so specialized that frequently achieving a majority rule is difficult if not impossible on many important issues. It is this combination of social, economic and technological change that has now made our current democratic systems of government dysfunctional.

In 2010, I went and voted in the mid term elections, it had been 20 years since I read Third Wave. I felt like a widget in an assembly line within useless political machine. “How”, I asked myself, “ does voting for strangers and pretending that these people actually represent me, qualify as representative form of government?”. In the summer of 2011 I started toying with putting together some ideas I had into a web site. By this month I finally have something that is at least presentable for a critique.

It is impossible to do this task alone. It will require the ideas of many people before the details of this system can be worked out. Then will come the task of trying to implement it on a small scale some where in the world.

The website is up!

I just completed the prototype for the specitocracy web site:

If I get enough interest I will re-host the site and register the domain name.
